For many people, hyperpigmentation is more than a skin concern. Dark spots, melasma, or post-inflammatory marks often go deeper than appearance. They affect how we feel about ourselves and how we show up in the world. What may look like an aesthetic concern, to some it can become a source of insecurity, discomfort, or even social withdrawal.
At Revalene Labs, this reality became the starting point for our work. We set out to create our first range of products focused entirely on hyperpigmentation, driven by science but inspired by compassion.
The emotional and social weight of pigmentation disorders
Research shows that pigmentation issues can significantly affect quality of life :
- Nearly half of people with hyperpigmentation (47%) say they feel embarrassed about their skin.
- Around one third (33%) feel less attractive because of it.
- About a quarter (24%) report that it directly impacts daily activities
Beyond the numbers, the emotional impact is clear. Many people hide behind layers of concealer and avoid photographs. What begins as a biological process often grows into something that damages confidence and well-being.
Melasma : a widespread condition
Among all forms of hyperpigmentation, melasma is the most common. Its occurrence varies widely across the globe, in some populations with high sun exposure it can affect up to 40% of adults.
On a global scale, studies suggest between 1% and 9% of the general population experience melasma, most frequently women in their 40s. In a large international study, the average age of those affected was 41 years old.
These figures highlight that pigmentation disorders are not only common, they also tend to appear at a stage of life when many people are already adjusting to other age-related changes.
Why we chose to focus on hyperpigmentation
Seeing the emotional behind the statistics convinced us at Revalene Labs to direct our first research program toward hyperpigmentation. For us, it’s not simply about fading spots, it’s about restoring balance, self-confidence, and peace of mind.
Our vision is clear :
- Develop a technology that works with the skin not against it.
- Offer visible improvements while maintaining tolerance and comfort.
- Deliver solutions that last, addressing root causes rather than temporary cover-ups.
